SPOILERS: ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Post-Credits Scene Explained

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a doozy of a movie. Not only is it one of the best animated movies to come out in ages, but it’s also a fresh, exciting spin on the superhero genre. Just like any major superhero movie, Into the Spider-Verse has a post-credits scene that gives the audience one more laugh and potentially sets things up for the recently announced sequels.

The scene opens in “Nueva York,” the futuristic setting from the Spider-Man: 2099 animated series. A female hologram quickly recounts the events of the film and reveals that she’s monitoring the Spider-heroes to an off-screen figure who is revealed to be Miguel O’Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099.

Voiced by Oscar Issac — yes, that means Poe Dameron is now officially a Spider-Man, everyone — O’Hara has to assemble a team of Spider-Men to complete an unknown mission. With the help of a dimensional transportation watch, O’Hara jumps back to where Spider-Man’s animated presence all began: the 1967 cartoon.

The movie ditches its slick look to adopt the blocky animation style the cartoon relied on. O’Hara may have showed up originally to recruit this Spider-Man to his team, but their conversation quickly degrades into a shouting/pointing match that sees the two Spider-Men recreate an iconic moment from the television show.

In what was clearly the creators’ attempt to recreate this iconic meme that derives from a moment in the show where an imposter Spider-Man and the real one got into an argument, the scene degrades into a hilarious showdown where the two Spider-Men stand around and yell at each other.

While it’s unclear whether or not Issac’s O’Hara will return and assemble a new spider-team to fight his unnamed threat in any subsequent Spider-Verse films, the scene is genuinely hilarious and left me wanting more from this fantastic movie.

Right before the scene, there’s also a short screen-cap that serves as a tribute to the late Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the two Spider-Man co-creators who both passed away over the last year, with the following quotes:

“That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero,”

“Thanks to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, for showing us we’re not the only ones.”

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, & Rodney Rothman from a script written by Phil Lord, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, and Lily Tomlin.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on December 14, 2018.
