‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Sequel & All-Female Spinoff In Development

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Sony is already developing a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel and all-female spinoff.

With a little over two weeks before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters, Sony Pictures Animation has hired Voltron: Legendary Defender co-showrunner Joaquim Dos Santos to direct the sequel.

UPDATE: The trade has revealed that the script for the second film will be penned by Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer David Callaham.

Furthermore, Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse co-director Lauren Montgomery is in negotiations to helm an untitled project centered on female heroes in the Spider-Man universe. Bek Smith, the writer of multiple episodes of CBS’ television series Zoo, is set to write the script.

Plots details for the sequel are currently under wraps, though Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will include hints on where the next film could go, and the outlet notes that fans should look for Spider-Gwen to be included in the spinoff. Other named contenders are Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Spider-Girl and Silk.

Amy Pascal will produce both projects with Avi Arad expected to return in some role. Although no deals have been made, Phil Lord and Chris Mille are expected to be involved creatively after having developed the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street,” bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, & Rodney Rothman from a script written by Phil Lord, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, and Lily Tomlin.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on December 14, 2018.
