‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Expected To Swing To A $30M Opening

With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man still in dust form, Sony is bringing fan-favorite Miles Morales to the big screen for the first time in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This all-new cross-dimensional tale promises a few more firsts for the big screen, such as Spider-Man Noir, Gwen Stacy’s Ghost Spider, and even Spider-Ham!

Sony is a box office debut of $30 million with a release on more than 3,800 screens across North America. However, early reviews and a positive buzz have pushed industry analysts to estimate a slightly stronger opening at more than $39 million.

The latest animated web-slinging adventure will finally bring Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) to mainstream audiences. Morales is a comic creation from Brian Michael Bendis, who felt it was time to bring a bit more diversity to Marvel. This new Spider-Man is a half-Puerto Rican and half-African-American teenager from Brooklyn whose Spidey adventure kicks off while exploring the city with his uncle (Mahershala Ali).

Into the Spider-Verse has already grabbed plenty of attention, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature, and already has claimed a rare 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. With the potential for a possible Oscar nomination, Spider-Verse has already been green-lit for a sequel by Sony, weeks before opening in theaters.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, & Rodney Rothman from a script written by Phil Lord, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, and Lily Tomlin.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters on December 14, 2018.
