The death of Stan Lee prompted fans across the world to pay tribute to the Marvel Comics legend in their own way, with many sharing photos of themselves with the late icon. However, Lone Ranger and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. star Armie Hammer criticized the tributes involving photos taken with Stan Lee in a since-deleted tweet, explaining that he believed those who shared the images were making Lee’s passing about themselves:
“So touched by all of the celebrities posting pictures of themselves with Stan Lee… no better way to commemorate an absolute legend than putting up a picture of yourself.”
Armie Hammer’s post received criticism from many, including The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who took to his own Twitter account to criticize Hammer for using people’s way of mourning to bring attention himself:
“Looks like you found a way to use others ways of mourning and their memories to draw some attention to yourself. You sound like a real asshat.”
In 1961, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby launched Marvel as it is known today with The Fantastic Four and went on to create some of the most beloved heroes and villains in comic book history, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. Today, Lee’s Marvel characters are the subjects of some of the most successful and acclaimed comic books films, most of which feature cameo appearances by the legend himself.
