Russo Brothers Talk Star-Lord Punching Thanos In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Star-Lord just can’t seem to catch a break, can he? He had to combat his own father in the second Guardians of the Galaxy film, and then after hearing about Gamora’s death, his emotional response of punching Thanos led to half of humanity being snapped out of existence. Avengers: Infinity War has come and gone, but if there’s one thing that the Russo Brothers have been asked about more than the title or teaser for Avengers 4, it’s Star-Lord’s actions that inevitably led to the heroes’ downfall in Infinity War.

Among the many things asked at the Avengers: Infinity War Q&A hosted by Collider last week, the Russo Brothers stated that the heroes probably would’ve managed to pry the Infinity Gauntlet away from Thanos had Star-Lord not interfered. Admittedly, yes, that would shorten the movie’s runtime and lessen the impact of any potential conflict, but by the same token, Star-Lord’s actions did still inevitably lead to half of humanity being wiped out by Thanos, including Peter Quill himself!

“No. That was the turning point of that scene. Again, these are flawed characters that make emotional choices, human choices. Had Quill not done that, the movie might have ended right there.”

It also would’ve lessened any possible or potential conflict for Avengers 4. After all, if the heroes got the gauntlet away from Thanos and prevented anything that would’ve warranted a fourth movie, where do you go from there? So in a way, the actions of Star-Lord also set up what will no doubt be undone by the time Avengers 4 comes around next year. Still, though, it does make you wonder how different things might have turned out had Star-Lord not let his emotions get the better of him.

How do you think Avengers: Infinity War might have turned out had Star-Lord not punched Thanos? Let us know in the comments below.

Avengers: Infinity War is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
