‘Star Trek’ Picard Series May Begin Production In April 2019

In a recent interview, Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman stated that the upcoming Picard series may begin shooting as early as April of 2019.

Earlier this year Kurtzman and Patrick Stewart shocked Star Trek fans all around the world by announcing that Picard would be returning to the Star Trek universe with his own series. This was the latest addition to a plan to expand the Star Trek television franchise along with a series of shorts that will focus on other characters.

It is currently unknown what the series will be about.  In the few instances where Patrick Stewart and Kirtzman have talked about it, they indicate that Picard will be a different man from when we last saw him. Kirtzman is hoping to begin shooting by April of next year. He could not comment, however, as to when the show may be released.

In his time as a lead member of the franchise Stewart has appeared as the iconic Jean Luc-Picard in two show series and four feature length films since first taking on the role in 1987. He appeared as a guest star in the spin-off, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine before appearing in the films. His character was last seen in the 2002 film, Star Trek: Nemesis. Sadly it was not the most gracious of sendoffs for the iconic character. The film was sadly a box office disappointment, only earning $67M on a $60M budget and received mostly negative review from critics. Perhaps the upcoming series will provide a more gracious exit for one of the best captains to grace the science fiction genre.

What do you all make of this news? Are you looking forward to Picard’s return to the franchise? Should they have left the character alone? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
