‘Star Trek’: Walter Koenig Agrees Not Recasting Anton Yelchin Is The Right Move

Anton Yelchin passed away in a freak car accident only a few months ago, to the shock and surprise to his friends, family, and fans. Yelchin played Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, and out of respect for his character, it was decided that he would not be recast. Star Trek alumns such as George Takai have already spoke out to honor the late actor, and now the original Pavel Chekov, Walter Koenig, also spoke out to say he agrees with the decision to not recast Yelchin.

While speaking with Yahoo Movies, Koenig was asked his opinion about the decision, and this was his response:

“I think it’s the right call; it’s paying Anton the most respect. I was devastated and still am devastated [by his death]. I spent just a couple of hours with him, but I could tell he was a very good person. He was extraordinarily talented and versatile, and a human being that I would like to be friends with.”

It was confirmed by Abrams earlier in the year that Yelchin would not be replaced by a new actor. According to Abrams:

“I can’t possibly imagine that [recasting], and I think Anton deserves better.”

Out of respect for the actor who was taken too soon, it seems like it’s unanimous that it was the right decision to not recast him. To Anton Yelchin, live long and prosper, friend. Rest in peace.

Do you think it was the respectful move to not recast Yelchin? Let us know in the comments.
