‘Star Wars’: BB-8 Originally Had A Much Different Name

BB-8 is one of the more popular characters in the new Star Wars trilogy, but the lovable droid almost had a different name when it was first created.

At this point, can you imagine BB-8 being named anything other than BB-8? The lovable droid’s personality and name seemingly go hand-in-hand nowadays in the Star Wars universe, but there was a time in the development process when the character had two entirely different names.

In an interview with Endor Express, special effects and make-up artist Neal Scanlan, who has now worked on Star Wars: The Force AwakensRogue One: A Star Wars StoryStar Wars: The Last Jedi, and the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, discussed the process of creating and naming these creatures and aliens that are such an integral part of Star Wars lore:

“We work absolutely during the production process with codes for secrecy. We then often have a retrospective phone call with Pablo (Hidalgo) and the guys and he’ll ask ‘what were you thinking about when you designed this character?’ and I’ll maybe say that this one is kind of like the actor John Candy, he’s sweet at heart but he’s this, this, and that, and we have a bit of fun playing with ideas and that’s when we get to hear what their real names are. BB-8, for instance, started out as Snow Girl or Globe at one time – there were four or five names for BB-8. BB-8 didn’t come until VERY, very late, and that’s probably for very good reasons as he’s such an important character.”

While Globe is fairly unoriginal, it’s interesting to think how BB-8 would have evolved if it had been named Snow Girl instead. Would you have preferred that name to BB-8? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to check out the full Neal Scanlan interview at the link below!

In the meantime, BB-8 and many other droids and aliens can be seen in the newest Star Wars entry, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.
