‘Star Wars’: Ben Mendelsohn Discusses ‘Enormously Different’ Scenes For ‘Rogue One’

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' star Ben Mendelsohn discusses alternate takes of scenes that he believes would lead to an "enormously different" cut.

While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently enjoying critical and box office success, there was a segment of fans who were concerned about the film prior to its theatrical release. Fans were worried that the project was in trouble following reports that the film was undergoing major reshoots being led by writer Tony Gilroy, as opposed to director Gareth Edwards. While the positive reception towards the film appears to prove these concerns to be unwarranted, star Ben Mendelsohn recently spoke with Collider where he discussed alternate takes of certain scenes that would lead to a reasonably different cut of the final film.

Mendelsohn confirmed that certain scenes had a number of different renditions.

“Yep, absolutely, very much. We did have multiple, multiple ways of going at any given scenario, we had multiple readings of it. So should they ever decided to, there would be a wealth of ways of approaching these different things. And I know from having seen sort of the crucial kind of scenes throughout it, I know there’s vastly different readings of at least four of those scenes.”

Mendelsohn believes there was enough material that would result in an alternate cut of the film.

“Absolutely, with enormous differences within I would’ve said 20 or 30 of the scenes…There would be enormously different renderings.”

Mendelsohn explained that despite the changes throughout the films development, his character, Orson Krennic, remained largely the same as when he agreed to take on the role.

“In terms of the overall swoop, yeah, very much. I think that Krennic developed sort of along as we went, he had different ideas. And he settled yet on exactly –He was still thinking of a couple of variations in a lot of things at that stage. If you want to talk about alternative takes on things, there’s been quite a few different renderings of this within Gareth’s mind, and I dare say some of it’s been captured on film. So there are different renderings.”

While fans can only imagine what these alternate takes actually look like, it is probably a safe bet that the best chance we will get to see the omitted material is if they are included in the films upcoming home video release.
