‘Star Wars’ Director Says Kylo Ren & Rey Have A ‘Brother & Sister Thing’

Director J.J. Abrams spoke to fans about the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren at the end of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.

A new video from a screening of The Rise Of Skywalker sees director J.J. Abrams describe the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren at the end of the film as similar to that of Luke and Leia from the original trilogy. The controversial kiss comes after Rey and Kylo Ren defeat Emperor Palpatine in the finale and after Kylo revives Rey from the damage she took in the battle. The pair embraced before Kylo passed away from transferring his life-force to Rey.

Director J.J. Abrams was recently heard discussing the relationship between the two as being like siblings. He explained that although he felt they had a romantic connection (hence the brief kiss) the pair are more bound together in a spiritual way. Director J.J. Abrams also compared Rey and Kylo’s relationship to Luke and Leia by referencing the original romantic musical theme for the Skywalker siblings that was written by John Williams before the iconic twist. Watch the video of director J.J. Abrams discussing the sibling relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren below.

“There’s as much of a brother and sister thing with Rey and Kylo Ren as there is romantic. So it’s not literally a sexually/romantic kind of thing. It’s more like they’re just bound together in this crazy, spiritual way. Again, felt romantic to me. It’s like John Williams, if you listen to the –when he first wrote the Luke theme. It was a romantic theme for Luke and Leia. That was kind of what he was thinking because he didn’t know where it was going.”

Do you agree with director J.J. Abrams about the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren? Do you think it’s like Luke and Leia’s or was it more romantic? Sound off in the comments below!
