It seems secrecy around Disney’s franchises is being taken to the next level. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were kept under wraps tightly so that their endings could be a surprise for fans. Well, now it seems Star Wars is going through a similar but maybe even more extreme treatment. A big secret around the already highly unknown Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker concerns Doctor Who and The Crown star Matt Smith. Variety reported back in August that Matt Smith was cast in the film and even Disney mentioned him in this Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker description on their UK website:
Now the same Disney webpage has removed Matt Smith’s name from the cast. So, what’s going on? Is Matt Smith in the film or not? The actor spoke to the L.A. Times back in March and assured he had no knowledge that he was indeed in the new Star Wars film. Nevertheless, some have questioned Matt Smith’s truthfulness here. Speculation has run wild that Matt Smith has a top-secret role in the film and maybe Disney decided to uncredit him for the time being until the film releases and his part in the film is finally revealed. Rumors point to Matt Smith’s potential role in Episode IX having something to do with Emperor Palpatine and his return to power. In the now expunged Star Wars Expanded Universe, Emperor Palpatine was able to transfer his consciousness to clones of him.
What do you think? Could Matt Smith be in the film? Is it possible that Matt Smith could have something to do with Emperor Palpatine’s return? Or do you think Matt Smith may have wound up on the cutting room floor? Sound off in the comment section down below!
While his role in Star Wars: Episode IX is uncertain, Matt Smith will be seen in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film Morbius.
Full plot details for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are currently under wraps, though the film is set to conclude the Skywalker saga before the franchise takes a three-year hiatus from theaters.
