Disney+ Changes Star Wars Han Solo/Greedo Scene Once Again

The launch of Disney Plus has revealed that George Lucas made one last change to the infamous confrontation between Greedo and Han Solo in Star Wars.

According to Vanity Fair, Disney Plus has now revealed that the powers that be have “further altered the deal” by changing the original six Star Wars movies once again in time for the launch of Disney Plus. Lucasfilm employee Pablo Hidalgo has confirmed that these changes were made by George Lucas for the planned 3-D rereleases of the original six films. Although those plans were ultimately shelved once Disney acquired Lucasfilm and confirmed that new Star Wars movies would be made, the new Star Wars remasters still included some final changes to the movies before the maker himself retired.  The biggest controversy among the new batches of changes is the newest revision of the scene where Han Solo kills Greedo:

In the original cut of the film, Han Solo shot Greedo with a hidden blaster before a bragging Greedo could kill him. In 1997, a new edit of the film had Greedo open fire before Han Solo killed his enemy. This didn’t sit well with fans, so subsequent revisions made it so that Han Solo shot a fraction of a second after Greedo. The good news is that, in the latest iteration of the classic Star Wars scene that can only be seen on Disney Plus, Han Solo and Greedo now shoot at the same time instead, which is likely the biggest compromise that the creator of Star Wars is willing to make at this point.

But there’s a catch: shortly before they exchange blasts in the Disney Plus remaster, Greedo now says something that sounds like “Maclunkey!” before missing Han Solo by a wide margin. What Greedo’s last words are when translated from Huttese is unknown at this time, but perhaps it was a warning to Han Solo that he’s a terrible shot. There are some other changes to the old movies, such as Luke’s lightsaber now appearing blue in a scene on the Millennium Falcon. It seems appropriate that one of the last edits that George Lucas ever made to his iconic space opera was to revisit the most controversial change he ever made to one of his movies… And it’s amusing that it didn’t come up until the launch of Disney Plus, seven years after he sold Lucasfilm.

Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams. Carrie Fisher will also appear as General Leia Organa through the use of previously unreleased footage shot from previous Star Wars films.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
