Yesterday, Jon Favreau took to his Instagram to share a photo of a very familiar Star Wars droid, which you can see in the image below:
This droid, turns out, is R5-D4 Now we’ve never heard this droid referred to by name, but in the original Star Wars film, Luke refers to it as “Red” after purchasing it from some Jawas. Eventually, Luke and Uncle Owen ended up with R2-D2 anyway after swapping out R5-D4. Since then, the Star Wars droid was nowhere to be seen except for the only other likely location: toy aisles. But based on Jon Favreau’s image, perhaps the droid not only made it through everything that’s happened since the original Star Wars, but it may be headed for The Mandalorian.
Granted, R5-D4 looks a bit rustier than we remember, but a lot of time has passed since the first Star Wars film and Return of the Jedi. Ultimately, though, if you recall this droid, do you expect it to make an appearance in Favreau’s upcoming Star Wars series? If so, what role do you think R5-D4 could play in The Mandalorian? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming Star Wars series.
The Mandalorian will star Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, and Werner Herzog. The series will debut exclusively on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service.
