‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Artist Gives Us Early Look At Luke

In a recent post, Star Wars artist Christian Alzmann gave us an early look at Luke and some of the early ideas that went into the older version of his character.

The post in question shows photo-realistic image of Mark Hamill as the iconic Star Wars character. In it, we see an old man who is not at all unlike the character we eventually saw at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and later Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The only main difference between  them, however, is a top knot. Such looks have been otherwise common for the Jedi in the various Expanded Universe installments for Star Wars, (Cannon and Legends), but very rarely seem to make it into the films, despite the obvious inspiration from samurai.

In the post, Alzmann gave us a rather disconcerting idea for what the character was suppose to be like:

My first image I made for Star Wars : The Force Awakens. This was January of 2013. Luke was being described as a Col. Kurtz type hiding from the world in a cave. I couldn’t believe I was getting to make this image and I got a George “Fabulouso” on it to boot.

From the look of things, Luke’s original story in The Force Awakens may have been a lot darker then what we ultimately got.

Kurtz was one of the major character from Joseph Conrad’s iconic 1899 novella, Heart of Darkness, before it was adapted into 1979 Vietnam War film, Apocalypse Now!, (which George Lucas was originally set to direct oddly enough), that followed a U.S. Army Captain, (Martin Sheen) as he tracked the Colonel, (Marlon Brando) through the war torn country. By the time the captain caught up with Kurtz, he found him completely insane and acting like the king of his own private army of natives, while still fighting the war his way. And if this post is to be believed, it’s possible that Luke originally had similar story. What a creepy thought that would have been!
