Today marks exactly one year until J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters next December and concludes the Skywalker saga.
2018 saw the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the launch of the animated series Star Wars Resistance. Last December’s The Last Jedi left fans divided and Solo saw disappointing box office returns. This December marks the first time a Star Wars film is not in theaters since The Force Awakens in 2015. However, 2019 will see the return of Star Wars in December, exactly one year from today.
Filming for Episode IX has been underway since August and the film brings back Abrams in the director’s chair, replacing Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow. Abrams co-wrote the script with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scribe Chris Terrio. Episode IX will also utilize unused footage of Carrie Fisher as Leia to give the character a satisfying ending. Franchise veteran John Williams is also set to return to score his final Star Wars film. Not much else is known other than the film being the last installment of the Skywalker saga.
Rumors circulated that a trailer could be hitting before Christmas, but there has been no sign of that so far with no official title for the film as well. While The Force Awakens released its title and a teaser in November, a year out from release, fans can probably expect Episode IX news early next year. In 2017, The Last Jedi title was announced in January and the first trailer came at Star Wars Celebration in April; Star Wars Celebration Chicago takes place April 11-15 in 2019.
