In an interview with Good Morning America, Smith revealed that he just came back from his Episode IX set visit from London, and he was awestruck at how massive the set was where he witnessed a scene being filmed. Smith explained:
“Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive.”
Abrams returns to the director’s chair for Episode IX to conclude the sequel trilogy that he set up in with The Force Awakens and that writer/director Rian Johnson continued with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson’s film is perhaps the most polarizing film in the franchise, and Abrams’ Episode IX is reportedly a “course-correction” following the polarizing reception to The Last Jedi and the under-performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
