One year, to be exact. That’s about the crux of it, really, based on a report from Empire Magazine, which indicates that the next installment in the Star Wars saga will take place one year after the events of The Last Jedi. As you’ll recall, Luke Skywalker’s astral projection took on Kylo Ren while giving the Resistance time to escape, thanks to some help from newly mastered…well, master, Ren. Given the depleted numbers and resources that the Resistance was left in at the end of The Last Jedi, it will be interesting to see how things pick up.
After all, the First Order is very much still on the trail of what remains of the Resistance, and with Supreme Leader Snoke out of the way, Kylo Ren is the one calling the shots after his failed attempt to bring Ren to his side. So will he have truly gone back to the dark side in Episode IX? And what of Rey? Does part of her still want to consider Kylo Ren’s offer? Very little is known about the plot in the film that is said to wrap up the Skywalker saga, and the film won’t be in theaters until next December, so fans will do what they do best until then: theorize.
Though, for those whose opinions on Star Wars have soured as of recent, perhaps the year long gap between Episode IX and The Last Jedi would help reluctant fans embrace the next installment if it’s trying its hardest to move past what came before. Not to mention, in real-life implications, the large gap between Episode IX hitting theaters next year and the release of Solo earlier this year. Nonetheless, what do you think of this time jump? Would you want the film to pick up directly after or are you fine with the time jump? Let us know in the comments below.
