Rian Johnson has confirmed that the recently completed draft for Star Wars: Episode IX is not based on a treatment he turned into Lucasfilm.
It was widely reported several years ago that while Johnson would not be returning as director, he would be writing the treatment for the ninth chapter of the Skywalker saga but when the director was asked earlier this week on Twitter about his involvement with Episode IX, he revealed that is no longer the case.
Instead, Johnson will leave his only stamp on the franchise when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017.
The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Andy Serkis.
The script for the final episode of the sequel trilogy has been written by Jurassic World writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Trevorrow is also set to direct the film. Lucasfilm officially announced yesterday that Star Wars: Episode IX is slated for release on May 24, 2019.
