According to director Rian Johnson, the man behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film will open after the events of The Force Awakens.
For a quick refresher, The Force Awakens ended with Rey arriving on Ahch-To and handing over Anakin’s lightsaber to a disheveled Luke, who stood on a literal cliff.
During the show, Johnson confirmed that the film picks up right after the events of its predecessor. Picking up right after the events of a previous film is unprecedented for Star Wars, as most of them have a gap of a few years. Beyond that, all of the films have opened in space, so it’ll be an adjustment to open right on the planet of Ach-To.
However, to play devil’s advocate, Johnson never explicitly stated that the film would open on Ach-To, but would rather be picked up “right after the events of the last movie”, which means that there’s a chance that it picks up after any event in The Force Awakens, including how The First Order retrieved Kylo Ren off Starkiller base, or rather show Kylo Ren and General Hux going to visit Snoke.
