‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Director Rian Johnson On Writing The Crawl

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters at the end of this year and while the film will have plenty of new surprises for audiences, fans can expect the latest entry in the main saga to include the traditional opening crawl. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, director Rian Johnson discussed the pressure that comes with writing an opening crawl for a Star Wars film.

Johnson explained how Star Wars creator George Lucas ended up giving him indirect advice on how to craft an opening crawl:

“That was petri… Actually, you know, I just did it. I just started writing the draft. I wrote something, and it was terrible. And then I was watching one of the behind-the-scenes things and Lucas said, ‘It’s like writing a haiku.’ I realized as I was refining it what he meant. We didn’t finish the opening crawl and totally lock it until a few weeks ago actually. Because you’re like, ‘Do we need this word, do we need that word, what if we shift.’ It’s like a poem, there’s very little room for error in trying to get it just right. Which is awesome, it’s really fun.”

When asked which word he was most proud to include in the crawl for The Last Jedi, Johnson replied,  “Decimated.”
