‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ On Course For Second Place Debut In China

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is set to for a second-place opening weekend in China, where the film has finally been released.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set for a second-place opening weekend in China, where the film earned $7 million on Friday.

China box office data shows that Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned $7 million by 7 p.m local time, placing it behind the Chinese comedy The Ex-File: The Return of the Exes, which grossed $15.7 million by 7 p.m and is now in its second week. The running total for Star Wars: The Last Jedi in China – which includes midnight screenings and previews – currently stands at $8.28 million.

It is worth noting that The Force Awakens and Rogue One also opened in China to what was considered disappointing box office numbers. In fact, the Star Wars franchise as a whole has struggled to win over Chinese audiences at the box office, with the first six films of the saga failing to receive theatrical releases in the country until years later and only in some cases.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.
