Daisy Ridley Talks ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Tone & Rian Johnson

On the latest episode of The Star Wars Show, Daisy Ridley and her fellow co-stars note how The Last Jedi will differ from The Force Awakens.

In the most important segment of the weekly online Star Wars program, host Anthony Carboni discussed the newly-unveiled teaser for The Last Jedi with the people at Star Wars Celebration Orlando minutes after it aired.

Some of the key details worth mentioning are as follows:

• Daisy Ridley stated that the film will have a more ominous tone compared to The Force Awakens, and that Rey will feel overwhelmed by the Force in the movie.
• John Boyega stated that Finn will still struggle to decide if he’s going to continue running from the First Order of if he’s truly committed to the cause of the Resistance – and from the sounds of things, the latter happens. (“…When he does decide, it’s game on!”)
• Mark Hamill doesn’t necessarily think that we should expect the Rey/Luke dynamic in The Last Jedi to play out exactly like the Luke/Yoda dynamic in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi; the conversation also implies that we could see flashbacks of Luke training earlier would-be Jedi.
• Kelly Marie Tran still can’t believe that she’s actually a part of the Star Wars franchise and notes that she had to keep her family in the dark about her part for a while.
• Kathleen Kennedy previously wanted to work with Rian Johnson in years past; he eventually got the director’s seat in part due to his directing style and in part due to being such a big fan.

It has yet to be seen if more information on The Last Jedi will arrive on either May 4 (a fan holiday dedicated to Star Wars) or May 25 (the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope). Until then, we’ll keep you covered.

Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern have also been cast in unspecified roles.
