Luke Skywalker’s death in The Last Jedi came after the Jedi Master tapped back into the force and projected himself across the galaxy to become the legend the Resistance, inspiring hope in others to rise up against the domination of the First Order. While the amount of time Luke had disconnected himself from the force remains a mystery, there’s no question Luke’s act of heroism led him to make the ultimate sacrifice and become one with the force itself.
Hamill revealed on social media that he sees his character death similar to how many drug users die when having a relapse after spending an extended amount of time sober. You can check out his tweet below.
Although Luke Skywalker may have passed into the force, Hamill is officially confirmed to return in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX and expected to appear as a Force Ghost in the film. Abrams has returned to direct the final installment of the Skywalker Saga from a script he’s co-written with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice writer Chris Terrio. Production on the project is currently underway.
The film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russel, Matt Smith, Dominic Monaghan, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Mark Hamill.
Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the Star Wars franchise as we learn it.
