Mark Hamill Says He ‘Was Wrong’ About Luke In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

In the past few weeks leading up to the film’s worldwide release, Mark Hamill has subsequently opened up about his thoughts on returning to the role of the iconic hero. As the actor discussed with IMDB, he showed towards Luke’s role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as they differed from what director Rian Johnson had envisioned but ultimately Hamill’s mind changed after seeing the final product:

“I’ve had trouble accepting what he saw for Luke, but again, I have to say, having seen the movie, I was wrong.”

Johnson has brought up how he felt Star Wars: The Last Jedi had to challenge it’s characters instead of retreading on what was seen and done in the previous films of the saga in order to help the series progress further. Mark Hamill ended up agreeing with the director in that aspect of Luke’s undergoing some changes since we last saw him:

“I think being pushed out of your comfort zone is a good thing because if I were just another benevolent Jedi training young padawans – we’ve seen it and nobody can do it better than Alec Guinness and I shouldn’t even try. It’s not the Luke from the original it’s the luke from the new generation.”

Mark Hamill’s portrayal of the character indeed harkens a wiser, world-weary and cynical Luke than most fans were probably expecting and that can be challenging for some. Yet both the actor and Johnson agree that Luke has had different experiences since we last saw him in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi which leads to the Jedi Master harboring different qualities. However, considering that even Hamill himself had a change of heart towards Luke’s journey perhaps even the most skeptical of fans will eventually feel the same way?
