‘Star Wars’: Oscar Isaac Says ‘Episode IX’ Encourages More Improvisation On Set

In a recent interview, Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac claimed that the upcoming Episode IX had a lot more improvisation on set then the previous two films.

During a chat with IndieWire, the actor talked about the set environment of the upcoming film. According to him, it seems a bit looser then the previous films with the actors and filmmakers willing and able to try new things and have a bit more fun with the production:

The way they’ve been shooting it right now is looser than it’s been for the last two times. It does feel like a relief to get on set and feel like, ‘Oh, we can try things.’ It’s a testament to J.J. [Abrams] coming back and feeling confident. There’s less pressure for it to be right. We just want to make a good movie and have a really good time while doing it.

He later talked about some of the fan backlash against Star Wars: The Last Jedi but seemed to be rather dismissive of it and unsure how legitimate that it was:

Luckily, since I’m not directing it, producing it, or distributing it, I don’t have to worry so much about fan expectations. Also, not all fans have the same expectations … People had very strong feelings, but there wasn’t as much of an organized way to speak out about it. People that run blogs and websites need content. So it’s like, ‘There’s some content!’ Five people on Twitter. Hundreds. Whatever it is. Then you make it into a story.

From the sound of things, Oscar Isaac is behind his directors’ creative decisions one way or another.

Directed by J.J. Abrams from a script written by Abrams and Chris Terrio, the film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Dominic Monaghan, Matt Smith, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher.

Star Wars: Episode IX arrives in our galaxy on December 20, 2019.
