Joel Edgerton says he would love to return as Uncle Owen in the rumored Obi Wan Star Wars spinoff. The actor appeared in the prequels.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Edgerton shared some of his ideas for Uncle Owen’s involvement in the spin-off:
“I like the idea that Uncle Owen is one of those guys who has done some super cool s—, but has just never bragged about it. My idea is that he could go out and have some adventure, and then he comes back and slips back into that unassuming moisture farmer role. Everyone talks about Obi-Wan being super cool, Owen secretly knows that he was there, and he did some of the cool s—, too.”
The actor is chomping at the bit so hard to return to the Star Wars Universe that he also stated that he would be willing to play a different character, even if he was unreckognizable in the role. He revealed some suggestions he made in a recent encounter with Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow:
“I saw Colin yesterday, I was like, ‘Dude. Star Wars. Me.’ And he’s like, ‘You have already been in the Star Wars world,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I could be someone else. My pitch to all of them is there’s definitely some Owen possibilities, but also, I was only in the movie for a pinch of time. How about I play someone else? I can do Boba Fett. I’ll just never take off the mask.”
Of course, the Obi-Wan film is not officially on the slate for Disney and Lucasfilm, but with as much as Ewan McGregor has been talking it up lately, it might as well be at this point. His role as a younger Obi-Wan Kenobi was the best part of the prequels and it’s the one anthology film that seems to have the most interest from fans across the board. And an appearance from Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru would totally make sense as old Ben Kenobi was charged with keeping a watchful eye on the young Luke on Tattooine.
The next chapter in the Star Wars saga will be Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits theaters December 15, 2017, followed by the untitled Han Solo anthology film on May 25, 2018, and then Episode IX on May 24, 2019.
