In the commentary track for Star Wars: A New Hope, George Lucas discusses Princess Leia’s accomplishments, including her holding a Ph.D., which makes her Dr. Organa. However, this revelation was pointed out by Dr. Becca Harrison, a professor at the University of Glasgow. While reading through Dr. Carolyn Cocca’s book Superwomen: Gender, Power, and Representation, Harrison discovered the Star Wars quote. You can check out the quote below:
“Young, nineteen, the same age as what Luke was supposed to be, but instead of being kind of an idealistic naïve farm boy from the far reaches of the netherlands, she’s like a very sophisticated, urbanized ruler, a Senator, so she’s a politician, she’s accomplished, she’s graduated, got her PhD at nineteen and she rules people and is in charge. [I needed an actress] who could be young and play with a lot of authority … and push these guys around.”
Dr. Leia Organa will next be seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in theaters on December 15, 2017.
