During the Galactic Innovations: Star Wars and Rogue One event, visual effects artist, Rachel Rose, revealed that the stunning shot seen in Rogue One‘s first trailer wasn’t initially planned. According to the artist, the shot was added into Rogue One‘s first trailer at the last second as no one actually it completed in that time:
Just a few weeks before the first trailer of Rogue One came out, a decision was made that there needed to be this Death Star reveal within the trailer. But this was something we weren’t expecting to actually do.
The shot, in question, comes roughly forty-five seconds into Star Wars: Rogue One‘s first trailer. In the shot, we see the Death Star completely dwarf nearby Star Destroyers while still under construction. Ultimately the shot in Rogue One’s first trailer gave us a bigger idea of the stakes. And it was thanks to the hard work of a group of effects artists who had to plug in the Death Star into Rogue One‘s trailer at the last minute.
