In an interview, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the next Star Wars spin-off could be announced in Summer 2017.
We already know that there are big plans for the future of Star Wars. Just last month, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the creative team behind these movies is thinking about the next “decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories,” as crazy as that may sound. So when should we expect an announcement? Speaking with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that something could happen this summer:
“I think we’re getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.”
So it sounds like we could be getting an announcement or two regarding future Star Wars projects at this July’s D23 Expo, though that remains to be seen. In addition, Kennedy was also asked about whether or not the Skywalker saga would be the main focus of the main films after Episode IX, which we previously heard would wrap up the new trilogy that begun with The Force Awakens. Here’s what she had to say:
“There’s no question that this is set up as a trilogy and that three-act structure of the set-up, the conflict, and the resolution very much is what we have planned. It’s interesting you ask that, because I’m sure everybody would love for me to say, ’Oh yeah we’ve got this figured out for the next 20 years.’ No, we spend a lot of time talking, debating, watching, looking at what connects with ourselves, with the audience, all of that is a part of our decision-making. We’re asking those questions right now. We’ll make a decision soon.”

What do you guys think about Kennedy’s comments? Which Star Wars spin-off would you like to see next? A spin-off movie revolving around Boba Fett or Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is something that fans have been asking for years, so could one of the two (or maybe even both) be getting a movie?
