‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ On Track To Flop At The Box Office In China

According to multiple data tracking services, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is on course to be a box office flop in China after earning a mere $2.2 million by 8:00 p.m. local time on Friday.

The final chapter of the main Star Wars saga came to an end with the release of The Rise of Skywalker and while the film is on track to earn impressive $170 million to $200 million in its North America opening weekend, it is currently projected to be the weakest-performing installment of the new entries in China.

With its $2.2 million box office gross on Friday in China, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker placed in fourth behind three Chinese films. According to Maoyan, an online ticketing agency, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is expected to earn a total of $18 million during its run in China.

The box office fortunes for The Rise of Skywalker in China continues the decline of the Star Wars franchise in the country. Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted with an opening weekend gross of $52.3 million before earning a total of $126 million in China. However, Rogue One earned $30.6 million in its first-weekend opening and a total run of $69.4 million while The Last Jedi declined even further with a $28.7 million debut and $42.6 million lifetime total.

Here is the official synopsis for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker:
