‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’: J. J. Abrams Addresses Rey’s Fast Mastery Of The Force

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J. J. Abrams addressed Rey’s strong and seemingly fast connection to the force.

While the Star Wars prequel trilogy has featured returning favorites from the original three films, the sequels have largely centered on the journey of the scavenger Rey and her struggle to find her place in the universe. During her journey, Rey has discovered that she has a strong connection to the force that prompts First Order leader Kylo Ren to seek a partnership with her in his quest to rule the galaxy.

While Rey has become a beloved heroine to many Star Wars fans since her debut in J. J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, others have criticized the character as being too powerful compared to the heroes of the past two trilogies, particularly Anakin and Luke Skywalker. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Star WarsThe Rise of Skywalker director J. J. Abrams noted that Rey was intentionally conceived as an “innately powerful” woman from the beginning:

“The idea was to tell a tale of a young woman who was innately powerful, innately moral, innately good, but also struggling with her place in the world and forced to fend for herself in every way. As exciting as it was to get to play in the Star Wars universe, it was this young woman that I felt oddly compelled to get to know. Even at the very first meeting with Kathleen Kennedy, the idea came up about having a female at the center of it. There was an inherent sense of “We’ve seen the story before of the young hero,” but we’d never seen it through the eyes of a woman like this, and that, to me, was the most exciting thing.”

However, some Star Wars fans continue to take issue with the fact that Rey seems to have mastered the force far too quickly for someone who is not a Jedi. However, J. J. Abrams reiterated that Rey’s seemingly unprecedented power is by design, saying, “Yeah, spooky, right? [Smiles] It’s a fair point. It’s not an accident.”
