‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’ Art Reveals Early Design For Palpatine’s Return

A Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sketch reveals an early design for Emperor Palpatine’s return.

Palpatine’s return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is one of the more controversial aspects in the film. The main reason is because Palpatine’s return after seemingly dying at the end of Return of the Jedi wasn’t explained at all in the film. However, The Rise of Skywalker novelization revealed that Palpatine was actually a clone along with Rey’s father.

The appearance of Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker was also hidden from the film’s marketing. In The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine resembled his look from prequels, albeit not deformed to the extent that he was after his encounter with Mace Windu in Revenge of the Sith. Palpatine was also hooked up to a giant machine before his final from was restored by Rey and Ben Solo’s life force. Production designer Kevin Jenkins has now shared an early sketch of Palpatine’s return on Twitter that you can see below.
