The Force Awakens brought back Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber after Luke lost it during his battle with Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. In The Last Jedi, the Skywalker lightsaber was split in two, only to be reforged in The Rise of Skywalker. A common criticism of the Sequel Trilogy from some fans is that Rey doesn’t construct a lightsaber of her own. However, Rey does eventually build her own yellow lightsaber seen at the end of The Rise of Skywalker after burying Anakin, Luke and Leia’s lightsabers on Tatooine.
As it turns out, we were meant to see more of Rey’s new lightsaber in The Rise of Skywalker beyond the film’s ending. According to Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak, we were originally going to see Rey build the new lightsaber with the help of the Jedi texts as a subplot in The Rise of Skywalker before it was cut from the film:
