‘Arrow’: Stephen Amell On His Philosophy For Oliver Queen In Season 6

Arrow Season 5 was an ending to the five season arc that Oliver began in the show’s first season. That arc tied the current day story-line directly with flashbacks from Oliver’s past, revealing lessons he had learned throughout his struggles both on and off the island during his time of supposed exile on the island of Lian Yu in the south China sea. That’s something we’ll see change going into the sixth season with the show journeying into a new phase. Stephen Amell opened up about those changes at FanExpo Canada this past weekend.

Amell discussed how he’ll view Oliver going into Season 6, making it a priority to see his character through the fans eyes:

“The thing I ask myself whenever I’m reading a script this year and it comes down to an Oliver-based issue is, ‘is he handling this like someone who has learned lessons along the way? If he’s not, then we change it because if he hasn’t taken away stuff from everything that has happened in the last five years, including and especially what happened at the end of season 5, then if I were a viewer, I would be like ‘Alright, enough with this guy.’”

The veteran actor was also asked about bringing more “classic” Green Arrow elements to the show:

“I think that some of the more classic elements can start to come to the forefront now. We’ve always been telling our own story, but we are not conjoined anymore to his backstory.”

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the North China Sea. He returned home to Star City, bent on righting the wrongs done by his family and fighting injustice. As the Green Arrow, he protects his city with the help of former soldier John Diggle (David Ramsey), computer-science expert Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), his vigilante-trained sister Thea Queen (Willa Holland), Deputy Mayor Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne), brilliant inventor Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum), and his new recruits, street-savvy Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez) and meta-human Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy). Oliver has finally solidified and strengthened his crime-fighting team only to have it threatened when unexpected enemies from his past return to Star City, forcing Oliver to rethink his relationship with each member of his “family.”

Arrow returns for its sixth season on Thursday, October 12 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
