In an unexpected switch-up, Steven Caple Jr. will be taking over for Sylvester Stallone to direct Creed 2, though Stallone will still act in the movie.
Variety has just released a report claiming that Stallone had considered directing Creed 2 — and, for a time, was officially set to direct — but the Rocky actor ultimately decided to hand the franchise to a new director after discussing things with lead star Michael B. Jordan and a few executives. After an extended search, Steven Caple Jr. was selected to direct by both Jordan and Stallone. Ryan Coogler, who directed Creed and has finished directing Black Panther, may join the project as an executive producer, although he has not signed onto the project as of yet.
Stallone remains aboard the project to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa, although he’s also the co-writer of the script with Cheo Hodari Coker (Luke Cage). Details on the story remain scarce, but it has been suggested that Rocky IV antagonist Ivan Drago will play a part in the story. Production on the film will begin in March.
Creed 2 will be released on November 21, 2018. Its cast includes Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, Tessa Thompson as Bianca, and Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago.
