Stephen Lang Talks ‘Avatar’ Sequels & What To Expect From His Villain

Avatar is currently the highest grossing movie of all time with a formidable worldwide haul of over $2.7 billion. Director James Cameron recently wrapped principal photography on the first two of four planned follow-ups.

Though not much is known about these sequels, it is known that Stephen Lang’s villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch will be returning to Pandora and the world of the Na’vi in a big, bad way, despite having been killed off in the first film. Talking to SlashFilm, Lang recently shed some light on what we can expect to see from his character in future installments:

“Quaritch, his place in this particular universe has gotten more complicated. And that’s kind of the extent of his involvement in the world. The world begins to — the world of Pandora — begins to affect him quite deeply in ways that he either refused or it did not affect him. And it gets under his skin.”

It sounds like Quaritch’s journey will be more of a psychological one that will play out over the course of the four sequels. According to James Cameron, the films will all follow the same small band of heroes as they repeatedly clash with Quartich:

“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf—– through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”

Lang will be joined by returning co-stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, Giovanni Ribisi and David Thewlis. Sigourney Weaver is also coming back to the series as a new character.

The first sequel recently titled Avatar: The Way of Water, arrives in theaters December 18, 2020.
