Stephen Lang Believes It’s ‘Highly Unlikely’ He’ll Play Cable In ‘Deadpool 2’

Stephen Lang hasn’t kept his desires to play Cable in Deadpool 2 a secret. The 64-year-old actor is among the most committed and hard-working actors working today, and he knows the power of campaigning for the right part. But despite a strong social media presence and more than a few vocal supporters, Lang might not get the part, and he knows it. Although there are a number of factors at play, there seems to be one key reason: James Cameron’s forthcoming Avatar sequels, which are expected to begin production at the same time as the other 20th Century Fox blockbuster continuation.

Stephen Lang discussed the matter with CinemaBlend while promoting his upcoming horror film, Don’t Breathe. While Lang is still as eager to play the part as he was in February, when he began vying for the part shortly after the first film’s release, he’s also very aware of time conflicts and how these things usually pan out.

I think it’s highly unlikely that they would ever give me the part, for a number of reasons, one of which being that it’s the same studio as Avatar. It’s a conceivable it would be a scheduling conflict, but you know, what I’ve said is that if they did give me the part, they’d be very satisfied  — because I’ll play the hell out of the part. But if they don’t give me the part, then I can be magnanimous in defeat, compliment the actor who does get the part, and console myself with four sequels to Avatar.

Granted, it’s not impossible for Stephen Lang to play Cable in Deadpool 2 and reprise his role of Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar 2, 3 and 4 at this time. There are no firm release dates for any of these films — as far as we know, at least — and there’s no firm production date in store for any of them either, only roundabout ideas as to when they might get in front of cameras. Deadpool 2, for instance, is expected to film in early 2017, but that’s not made certain. The Avatar sequels, meanwhile, are tentatively rumored to start production in April, according to ComingSoon.net, and that’s after several push-backs — which these long-promised sequels might also be subject to again in the near future.

But at the same time, it’s probably safer to keep Stephen Lang at bay than to double book him, especially since he’ll soon legally be a senior citizen. With that said, Lang has merely kindled the fire, and he’s letting his fans keep the flames burning for the time being, hoping Fox will listen.

The extent of my campaigning for the role was the initial tweet, and then after that, what I do is, when people do fan art, where they make me Cable, I retweet it, because I think it’s cool. Because why not? Because quite frankly, it’s a win-win situation.

That’s smart thinking, and while Stephen Lang is a little less optimistic about his chances to play Cable, he isn’t completely giving up hope either. So, for the time being, keep the fire strong if you want to see Lang in the part. In the meantime, however, you can see Lang in Don’t Breathe on August 26.
