‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Supports James Gunn Developing Sequel

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has offered his full support for James Gunn developing the sequel from Warner Bros. and DC Films.

Ayer’s return to the franchise was never on the table following the director’s creative differences with the studio during the film’s post-production process. The film has long been in development with Warrior director Gavin O’Connor previously set to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 with Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith returning. However, the studio will no longer be moving forward with that version of the project, as Gunn is said to be bringing a whole new take on the project.

Gunn was revealed to be writing the sequel with an eye to direct earlier today. The former Marvel director was fired by Disney off of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after old tweets from Gunn that were offensive in nature surfaced this past summer. Ayer was asked how he felt about Gunn boarding the project on Twitter to which he revealed his support and praised the Guardians director.

Gunn’s new take on the project leaves the return of Leto, Robbie, and Smith in question. Plot details for O’Connor’s script were under wraps but the story was previously rumored to center on the team of supervillain’s mission to find a terrifying new Weapon of Mass Destruction that turned out to be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

Newer reports, however, suggest O’Connor’s exit was actually due to the script being too similar to the script for DC’s Birds of Prey feature film, which features the female crimefighting team reportedly going up against the Gotham crime boss Black Mask.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the next Suicide Squad and the future of DC Films as we learn it.
