‘The Suicide Squad’ Director James Gunn Teases Comic Book Inspiration

The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to social media and teased a famous John Ostrander comic book that may inspire the upcoming film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director is known for deep cut comic book references and it appears his DC film will do the same. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is expected to shoot later this year, with the cast slowly taking shape. James Gunn is also expected to go back to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once work is completed on the DC film.

The Suicide Squad will feature the return of many actors who appeared in the first film along with newcomer Idris Elba. The Suicide Squad‘s development has been confusing, given that the film is being called a reboot. It seems James Gunn is approaching The Suicide Squad in a similar way Patty Jenkins is approaching Wonder Woman 1984. James Gunn has now teased what The Suicide Squad could be about. James Gun recently posted a John Ostrander comic book cover on his Instagram Story:

The cover James Gunn shared comes from a trade paperback titled Trial by Fire, which came out during the release of the first film and collects the beginning of John Ostander’s Suicide Squad run. What do you think James Gunn’s post means? Do you think we are getting another origin story? Sound off in the comments below!

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the new take on the supervillain team with his upcoming movie with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.

The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes The BatmanThe FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamNightwingSupergirl and New Gods.

James Gunn has already finished the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script and filming was going to start earlier this year. The director was then fired from the project after tweets resurfaced and moved over to Warner Bros. and DC. James Gunn now is back on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
