The Hollywood Reporter dropped the news earlier today. Though Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn is reportedly directing a mostly-new cast for villains and anti-heroes, the outlet is reporting that a handful of DC characters from David Ayer’s first film are expected to make a return for The Suicide Squad. Among them is the one and only Harley Quinn. This lines up with an earlier report from Forbes which said that Margot Robbie would indeed reprise her role as Harley Quin for James Gunn’s upcoming film.
If true, Robbie would so far be the only cast member returning from the previous Suicide Squad. Last week it was announced that Will Smith would not return as Deadshot after an amicable split with Warner Bros. and DC; however, The Hollywood Reporter does point out that the character of Deadshot, previously played by Smith, is expected to make his way into the James Gunn version.
James Gunn was brought aboard by Warner Bros. and DC following the filmmaker’s firing by Disney for a series of inappropriate tweets he sent out nearly a decade ago. Since then, Gunn has reportedly made the executives at WB and DC happy with his script and so much so that the project is on the fast track to casting.
