‘The Suicide Squad’ Producer Confirms Title & James Gunn’s Film Is Not A Sequel

During an interview with ComicBook.com, producer Peter Safran confirmed the title of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad film and that it won’t be a sequel to the first movie.

Director James Gunn is set to join the DC Extended Universe with a new Suicide Squad film that will feature some returning favorites and new characters. However, producer Peter Safran confirmed that while James Gunn’s film will be set in the DCEU and includes characters from David Ayer’s film, it won’t be a sequel to the first entry:

“It’s called The Suicide Squad. It’s not Suicide Squad 2. It is not a sequel. I will leave that alone but, yes, it’s called The Suicide Squad.”

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the new take on the supervillain team with his upcoming movie with Idris Elba taking over the role of Deadshot, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.

The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes The BatmanThe FlashGreen Lantern CorpsBirds of PreyBlack AdamNightwingSupergirl and New Gods.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
