China Release Unlikely For ‘Suicide Squad’

As Suicide Squad is preparing to open in theaters this weekend, it looks like the world’s second biggest market for cinema may not be releasing the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new DC Extended Universe film may not be released in China.

According to China Film Group, which is a state-backed distributor that handles the importing of foreign films, the film has not been put into its internal release calendar. This is usually set about two months in advance, and a Chinese executive has stated, “This is not a good film to release in China.” THR also reported that Warner Bros. declined to comment on the matter.

If the film manages to make it to China, it would be much later in the film’s release schedule. Regulators in China usually contact studios about the release of the films within a 30 to 45 day period before the official release of the film domestically.

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Suicide Squad opens in theaters tomorrow.
