Yet even with all that villainy floating around, there’s still seems to be time for love. Fans of the source material are well aware of the very, err, unique relationship between Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime. But it appears as if Suicide Squad will also feature some sort of romance between Will Smith’s Deadshot and Quinn. Smith revealed in a recent interview that his character is keeping an eye on Harley and not for mission purposes.
“Harley is the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot’s actually eyeballing her a little bit. There’s a pretty ragged romantic triangle there.”
And why not? Director David Ayer admitted that Harley is trying to escape the Joker’s influence in Suicide Squad so it’s only fair for her to find a new plaything.
“It’s about her breaking free of the Joker and becoming this fully actualised, independent person. That really is a metaphor for everyone’s journey here.”
“The New 52” DC Comics Universe has delved into these types of dealings before, with sparks flying between Harley and Deadshot. That is sure to set up some conflict between Smith’s character and the Joker which will undoubtedly play out in Suicide Squad. But Smith suggested that this Deadshot may not be looking for a fight as he opened up about where the character is when he is first introduced in the film.
“As the movie opens, he has a really big career score. He’s looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in Belle Reve for life.”
Interesting, very interesting. These teases have set up the primary characters nicely and given fans just enough information to peak their interest without spoiling anything too big. We’ll have to wait until Aug. 5, 2016 to get the full scope.
