Miss Martian (Sharon Leal)
I was taken by complete surprise when it was announced that Miss Martian had been added to Supergirl’s second season. M’gann M’orzz is well known thanks to a little show you may have heard of titled Young Justice. According to Kreisberg, Miss Martian is going to be essential to helping J’onn Jonzz reconnect to the red planet that they both came from. J’onn thought that he was the last of his kind from Mars, but he finds out that he isn’t which “opens the flood gates”.
“J’onn is suddenly going to have this connection to Mars that he’s been lacking for the last 300 years. He’s dealing with survivor’s guilt, and he’s spent the last few hundred years burying that. It’s only because of his interactions with Kara and his deepening relationship with Alex that he gets to start to tap back into that. The arrival of Miss Martian is really going to open the flood gates.”
If there is one thing Supergirl could do to make itself more appealing to DC fans, it is to focus on Martian Manhunter, and just let the character be awesome. Season one showed a more reserved J’onn J’onzz, and now that the series is on the CW they should really let loose and allow the character to be himself. Miss Martian will serve as an excellent catalyst to getting him there.
