Survey Says Moviegoers Want More R-rated Superhero Films

A new Fandango survey suggests that moviegoers want more R-rated superhero films like 'Logan,' and more R-rated 'X-Men' films in general.

Logan is nearly here (well, it’s already here thanks to Thursday evening showings) and it’s been receiving a wealth of attention and buzz for a number of reasons. Not only is it Hugh Jackman’s last outing as the clawed X-Man, it’s also another R-rated superhero film, following not too far behind Deadpool. Though the rating may turn some away from theaters, it’s a move many have praised. In fact, EW is reporting that a new Fandango survey says that the majority of moviegoers want to see more R-rated superhero films.

In a new Fandango survey of over 1,000 Logan moviegoers, 71 percent said they’d like to see more R-rated superhero films.

Of course, the limits of the survey must be noted here. Only 1,000 people were surveyed and those that were surveyed were specifically in theaters to see Logan, so the sample features people already interested in seeing an R-rated superhero film like Logan. The moviegoers were asked more than one question however.

Eighty-four percent of Fandango respondents said they were “interested in seeing a more violent R-rated X-Men movie.”

So, not only were the moviegoers interested in seeing more R-rated superhero films, they were even more interested in seeing more R-rated X-Men movies. Again, the already clear interests of the people surveyed should be taken into account here too.

Regardless, Logan is on pace to do well this weekend, despite the violence. Fans have already been speaking and voting with their money.

As for the critics, there hasn’t been 100% universal praise, but many feel that, for a superhero movie, it’s damn good.

You can read our review of the film right here.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan opens this Friday, March 3rd. The film also stars Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce, Richard E. Grant as Zander Rice, Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney/X-23, with Elizabeth Rodriguez, Eriq La Salle and Elise Neal.
