Swamp Thing has its fans, especially thanks Alan Moore’s iconic run on the title, but the character hasn’t gotten much notoriety in the live-action realm. Though it’s hard to bring a character like Swamp Thing to life, he’s a character that has the potential to look incredible with the right team behind it. The most highly regarded iteration of the character in live-action is Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing that had a much campier tone than the book but was certainly closer to the comics than its sequel was.
Now, Swamp Thing fans are in for a treat because The Conjuring and Aquaman will be joining Verheiden and IT writer Gary Dauberman in bringing the iconic DC character to the small screen. Swamp Thing is set to premiere on the DC Universe streaming service and will have a very hard-R rating. In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Verheiden discussed the tonal freedom that the streaming service provides.
“We’re all incredibly excited to be working on this, on this platform which is a new streaming platform that enables us to do shows that have a more adult edge, that can embrace the horror that Swamp Thing has as well as the emotionality.”
Verheiden also opened up about his excitement to work with Dauberman and Wan to bring the dark DC character to life.
“When I get a call and someone says ‘Would you be interested in working on Swamp Thing with James Wan and Gary Dauberman, who wrote IT’, I am very interested.”
