Madsen joins the cast as a series regular and will play Maria Sunderland who, according to the trade, “traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland, but Avery’s life-time obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp.” Madsen will star in the series alongside Crystal Reed (Gotham), Jennifer Beals, and Jeryl Prescott (The Walking Dead).
DC Universe’s Swamp Thing follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Reed) when she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, and develop a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — who is tragically taken from her. Powerful forces descend on Houma in an effort to exploit the swamp’s mysterious properties while Abby must discover the swamp mystical secrets including that the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
The series is written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman based on characters from DC created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The one-hour drama has been given a script-to-series order. Wan is executive producing the series through his Atomic Monster banned in association with Warner Bros. Television. Len Wiseman, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear also serve as executive producers with Rob Hackett co-producing. Wiseman is directing the series pilot.
Swamp Thing will be available exclusively on DC Universe in 2019.
