Take A Look At This ‘Star Wars’ Rey Theory

After the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans all got together to formulate theories for what we can expect from Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII. Theories have ranged from the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), what Luke Skywalker has been up to, etc. But the theories that have been most rampant online has been related to our new heroine, Rey (Daisy Ridley). Many have been wondering where her roots are to be found. Is Rey a Skywalker or isn’t she? That has been the prevailing debate since December, and the theories keep on chugging along.

A really fascinating theory has been conjured up by a YouTuber named Vincent Vendetta (that sounds like a cool superhero secret identity), describing the possibility that Rey is actually the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. Certainly, some have probably thought of this theory before, but Vendetta put together some compelling bits of evidence that can be found from The Force Awakens as well as Revenge of the Sith to make comparisons between both Rey and Palpatine’s fighting styles.

Similarities in their fighting styles help lend to Vendetta’s theory, but another interesting perspective on this matter can be found from the film’s screenplay – in which during her climactic battle with Kylo Ren after Finn’s near-demise, Rey is described as to “standing on the edge of the dark side”. This can imply that through means of visual storytelling, the image of Rey standing victorious over Kylo Ren serves as a sign that Rey may feel tempted to the dark side of the force.

Obviously, this is just pure speculation – but it is always fun to delve into fan theories about where our new Star Wars characters are headed. I am personally on the camp of Rey not being a Skywalker, because I think that would add an interesting story dynamic that is not as predictable. But at the same time, I am open to what Rian Johnson has in store for us come Episode VIII, which cannot come here soon enough. For more bits of evidence for this Rey/Palpatine theory, you can check out Vincent Vendetta’s video below.
