Sometimes it pays to be in the right crowd, as well as in the right place at the right time. Taran Killam, formerly of Saturday Night Live and Mad TV, is very much entrenched in geek culture, as he recently revealed on The Fandom Files podcast. But more than that, he was privy to details on Avengers: Infinity War before most.
It helps when you’re married to a cast member. Taran Killam tied the knot with Cobie Smulders, who plays Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe- most recently in Avengers: Infinity War and, next summer, Spider-Man: Far From Home. And among the many details Killam revealed on the podcast, dating back to Smulders rehearsing with Killam on the first Avengers film in 2012, he shared that his MCU wife managed to sneak a photo from the screen test.
It was with Avengers: Infinity War where Smulders let her husband know what would happen, as Killam explains:
“She did a screen test with about four or five other actresses. Infinity War was the first time where she let me know what was going to happen. Her tag was added on later in the schedule. She’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m there and then I disappear?’ I was like, ‘God, what does this mean? What does this mean?”
So while some moviegoers were left stunned at the likes of Spider-Man or Black Panther turning to dust, perhaps there’s one man who had an in at Marvel Studios and knew how this would play out from the very beginning. Connections are advantageous like that, you know? And when so many nowadays claim to have a source or inside scoop, we know who for sure actually does.
Avengers: Infinity War is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
