Star Wars actor Temuera Morrison will play the father of Arthur Curry aka Aquaman in the James Wan-directed DC Comics adaptation of the character.
The character, likely Thomas Curry though the name remains unconfirmed, is just the latest in a big week of casting for the underwater blockbuster. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman also joined the cast this week as the villain Black Manta and Aquaman’s mother Atlanna, respectively. They join Jason Momoa in the title role, Amber Heard as his queen Mera, frequent Wan collaborator Patrick Wilson as his Loki-esque half-brother Orm aka The Ocean Master, and Willem Dafoe as Atlantean adviser Nuidis Vulko.
Prior to Morrison’s casting, it was a bit odd to see Momoa’s on-screen family played by Wilson and Kidman. That’s because, in the Aquaman mythology, Atlanna is a queen of Atlantis who flees to the surface world and falls in love with a lighthouse keeper, Thomas Curry. It’s possible this leaves the (presumably angry) role of Atlanna’s husband and Orm’s father, the king of Atlantis, uncast.
Filming begins in April. It is currently the only DC Film ready to enter production. Wonder Woman and Justice League are in post-production for releases June 2 and November 17 of this year. The Flash is undergoing a page-one rewrite and The Batman recently had star Ben Affleck vacate the director’s chair. Meanwhile, David Ayer is on-board to write and direct the villainess team-up flick Gotham City Sirens and Doug Liman is set to tackle Justice League Dark. Films like Man of Steel 2, Suicide Squad 2, Shazam, and Black Adam remain in active development
Aquaman hits theaters October 5, 2018.
